Tips For Caring For Your New Goldendoodle's Coat

Many novelty breeds have become highly popular in recent years, but few of these dog breeds have become as popular as the goldendoodle. If you have been considering adopting a goldendoodle puppy, you have probably done a lot of research into what sets this breed apart. One of the unique characteristics of goldendoodle puppies is their coat. The curly, thick coat that goldendoodles have requires special care. Here are some things that you should know about caring for your new puppy's coat.

Get The Right Supplies

When you are ready to adopt your goldendoodle, you should have all the supplies on hand for proper coat care. You'll need to get a slicker brush with fine pins as well as a fine-tooth comb for detangling fur. Spray detangler can help with this as well. You'll also want some clippers, thinning shears, and scissors to help maintain your pup's coat length.

Sensitive skin is a widespread problem for goldendoodles. You can help your puppy combat this with oatmeal baths on a regular basis. The oatmeal will soothe your pup's dry skin and prevent any kind of rash or reaction from fragrances or other additives in the dog shampoo.

Finally, you will need a microfiber towel to help wick water out of your puppy's fur after each bath. Microfiber towels are a great investment given how thick a goldendoodle's coat is. With a towel like this, you can reduce the amount of blow drying or air drying that's required after bath time.

Plan For The Right Care

Make a point to bathe your goldendoodle with the oatmeal bath every couple of weeks. Use a warm water bath because water that's too hot will dry your dog's skin out and water that's too cold will make your puppy catch a chill.

Work the oatmeal bath thoroughly into the fur, covering every area. Massage your pup's skin as you bathe them to help work the oatmeal in and combat dry skin issues. Rinse the shampoo completely from your dog's fur with warm water until the water runs clear. You'll need to run your fingers through the fur since it's so thick, which makes it harder to rinse it clear.

Dry your puppy with the microfiber towel to draw away as much moisture as you can, then use the slicker brush and comb with a hairdryer on medium heat to finish drying the fur and combing it out.

You should brush and comb your goldendoodle's coat at least once a week. The curly, thick coat can get tangled and knotted if you don't keep up with it. Keep the fur trimmed around your puppy's eyes and on the rear haunches so that you don't end up with a mess or a dog that can't see well around all the fur.
