Posted on: 12 February 2018

Labrador dogs are well known for being friendly and loyal companions. If you are looking to purchase a lab puppy, you need to know how to take care of your puppy when you first get your puppy home. You need to make sure that the puppy is old enough before you bring it home, be sure to get your puppy vaccinated and start potty training right away.

Wait Until the Puppy Is Old Enough

To start with, you should never take a puppy before it is old enough to leave its mother. Taking a puppy when it is too young can result in behavioral issues with your puppy. Plus, your puppy needs it mother for nutrients during this time period before it is ready to transition to solid food.

You should never agree to adopt a puppy until it is at least eight weeks old. If you find a lab breeder, the date you agree to take the puppy should be at least eight weeks after the puppy was born.

Get Your Puppy Vaccinated

Next, you should make an appointment with your vet once you know when you will pick up your lab puppy from the breeder. Your puppy is going to need to start on their core vaccines as soon as possible.

Many of the core vaccines require a series of shots, so you are going to want to make sure that you set up an appointment right away. Until you can get your puppy in to be vaccinated, keep your puppy at home, away from other dogs. Do not take them to the dog park or show off your puppy to your friends until you are sure your puppy has the right vaccinations and is safe.

Start Potty Training

Finally, make sure that you start potty training your puppy right away. Every hour or so when your puppy is awake, take your puppy outside to use the bathroom. Watch your puppy for signs that they are about to go to the bathroom, and take them outside. When your puppy goes to sleep, take them outside right away to use the restroom.

When you are not at home with the puppy, make sure that you keep your puppy in a crate. Crate training is a great way to help your puppy learn when to use the bathroom.
